Clinical Bottom Line/Effectiveness
Brief Background:
- Glucosamine (GlcN) is generally utilized as a nutraceutical compound (dietary supplement) by osteoarthritis patients. Anabu™ (GlcNBu) is a synthetic analog of glucosamine.
- Preliminary studies show that GlcNBu increases bones mineral density, positively influences bone quality, increases collagen gene expression, protects articular cartilage, and treats inflammation (1;2;3;4). However, research in humans is lacking.
- At this time, there are limited high-quality human trials to support the efficacy of Anabu™ for any indications. Also, published safety evidence is lacking.
- The present data indicate the need for more detailed investigation into the function and absorption of this agent, particularly in humans
