Clinical Bottom Line/Effectiveness

Brief Background:

  • The Alexander technique is an educational program that was formulated between 1890 and 1900 by F. Matthias Alexander. It teaches movement patterns and postures, with an aim to improve coordination and balance, reduce tension, relieve pain, alleviate fatigue, improve various medical conditions, and promote well-being. Actors, dancers, and athletes use the Alexander technique with the goal of improving their performances. This technique is available through wellness centers, health education programs, and from individual teachers. Although the Alexander technique is used to treat many medical conditions, including back pain, posture, and balance, there is currently little high-quality scientific evidence available on its efficacy.
  • In 1987, the North American Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique was formed to educate the public about the Alexander technique and to establish and maintain standards for the certification of teachers and teacher training courses in the United States.
